Every activity, and business activity is no exception, generates a carbon footprint that can be measured in tons of CO2 equivalent emitted into the atmosphere. In the business world, it is usually measured annually, and is known as the corporate footprint. Depending on the type of activity that generates the emissions, this footprint is classified into scopes, with three scopes being defined. In this article we explain what the scopes are.
Recently, different regulations and legislation have been defined that specify how companies must declare and publish information on the sustainability of their companies, the most relevant being in the European Union the CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive), which affects companies of a certain size.
Regardless of the legal obligation to declare the corporate footprint, more and more companies see the business benefit of calculating the footprint and defining their sustainability strategy. Large corporations require sustainability information from their suppliers, which is becoming an increasingly relevant factor when deciding which suppliers to work with. Likewise, in more and more tenders, the presence of a sustainability strategy is a decisive factor or one that adds points, which can be the difference between the success or failure of a business opportunity.
For all these reasons, more and more companies in Spain use the voluntary registration of MITECO as a tool for registering and demonstrating their sustainability strategies that allows them, in an official and standardized way, to obtain the business value of their sustainability strategies. In this article we explain what it consists of and how you can use ClimateTrade services to carry it out successfully.
The voluntary MITECO registry is a registry created in 2014 to record the efforts of Spanish companies in calculating and reducing their environmental footprint (you can find more information at this link).
This registry is made up of 3 different types of information:
The first step a company must take is to register its carbon footprint. To do so, it must register within MITECO. To register, in addition to the requirements that you can see on the registration page, you must calculate the corporate footprint and provide a plan to reduce it.
To calculate the corporate footprint, you can use MITECO’s own calculator, although it only covers scopes 1 and 2. Scope 3 is the most complex, but also one of the most relevant for most companies. You can hire our Prime calculator to perform a more detailed calculation that includes several categories of scope 3, such as business trips or employee transportation to the office. You can also contact us to request a calculation quote from our environmental technicians if you prefer assistance, a very interesting option if it is the first time you calculate your footprint.
Once your company has registered with MITECO, it obtains the participation seal, which demonstrates the commitment to sustainability, as certified by the ministry itself.
The most basic seal is the “Calculation” seal, which shows that the company has made the effort to calculate its environmental footprint and has presented a plan to reduce it. The seal indicates the year of calculation, so if a company registers its corporate footprint for previous years, it will obtain the seals corresponding to the years presented.
This seal can be used by the company on its website and in its corporate materials, as well as in information for its clients and tenders to demonstrate its environmental commitment. Since a seal is obtained for each year calculated, several seals can be used to indicate the continuity of this commitment.
When 4 consecutive years of corporate footprint have been recorded, it is possible to check whether there has been a reduction in emissions. This reduction in emissions is not gross, but rather the intensity of the emissions is defined in relation to the economic activity of the company.
Once this reduction has been confirmed, the “I Reduce” seal is obtained, which is complemented by the “Calculation” seal. For example, if a company calculates its carbon footprint in the years 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017, and in the last year the reduction in the intensity of emissions is confirmed, it would obtain 3 “Calculation” seals (corresponding to the years 2014, 2015 and 2016) and a “Calculation and I Reduce” seal corresponding to the year 2017.
A company can offset the emissions from its corporate footprint by purchasing carbon credits from one of the absorption projects registered with MITECO. This is as easy as visiting our marketplace, using the filters to view the projects in the MITECO registry and purchasing the desired credits. Upon completion of the purchase, a certificate of the offset will be obtained and it will automatically be registered with MITECO. There is no minimum amount to offset and it does not have to be in a single project.
Once the offset has been made, the company can use the “Compensation” seal, which can be combined with the calculation seal in the “Calculation, Compensation” seal or also with the Calculation and Reduction seal, obtaining the most complete “Calculation, Reduction, Compensation” seal.
